Who says opera is just for grand theaters? This week, Goshen Elementary students proved that powerful voices and high-energy learning belong right in the school auditorium.

Thanks to a visiting performance by the Utah Opera, students in grades K–5 took part in "Who Wants to Be an Opera Star?"—a lively, game-show-style assembly designed to introduce young listeners to the world of classical vocal music.

Accompanied by pianist Marine Eckert, Utah Opera Resident Artists Hyein Hong (soprano), Isabelle Kosempa (mezzo-soprano), Colin Miller (tenor), and J. Andrew Garratt Jr. (baritone) took the stage to perform dramatic operatic scenes. Between musical numbers, students tested their knowledge of tempo, vocal ranges, and storytelling through interactive game-show trivia.

The interactive assembly directly supports the Utah Fine Arts Core Standards, bringing high-caliber arts education straight into public school classrooms. These performances are provided at no cost to Utah public schools through state and legislative support via the Professional Outreach Programs in the Schools (POPS)—under the direction of the Utah State Board of Education—along with generous funding from the Elizabeth Brown Dee Fund for Music in the Schools.

Over the past school year, the Utah Opera Resident Artists delivered 129 educational performances across the state, ensuring thousands of young Utahns get a front-row seat to world-class music.
